Simply put, our mission is economic development & job creation ... from a Main Street perspective. We work to both increase the number of profitable small businesses in Duplin County & the surrounding areas as well as increase the success rate of existing small businesses.

The JSCC Small Business Center provides free and confidential counseling & workshops to prospective & existing business owners to help ensure their success.

The Small Business Center (SBC) at JSCC is one of 58 Small Business Centers throughout North Carolina.  Our objective is to increase the success rate and the number of viable small business in Duplin County and the surrounding areas by providing high quality, readily accessible assistance to prospective and existing small business owners which will lead to job creation and retention.  We are a community-based provider of education and training, counseling, mentoring, information resources and referrals.  Assistance is available to anyone currently operating a business or planning a business start-up.  There is no charge for our services, but appointments for counseling sessions and advanced registration for seminars and workshops are strongly recommended.

We offer a variety of seminars in the areas of starting a small business, writing business plans, financial & cash flow management, using QuickBooks to manage your business, critical metrics for a small business, why some business are successful, creating a web page for a small business, using social media, improving credit scores & loan availability, and many others. Confidential Counseling
One-on-One Coaching & Mentoring
We offer confidential one-on-one counseling for the prospective or current business owner. These sessions typically identify the goals of the business owner & then help them develop a plan to succeed. If needed, referrals are made to other resources as appropriate.

We also have extensive networking & relationships with a variety of services & agencies, including the State Department of Commerce, Small Business Administration, State Business Licensing Information Office, Duplin County Economic Development Commission, Local Chambers of Commerce, NC Small Business Center Network, NC Small Business & Technology Centers, SCORE, & many other public & private sources of assistance.  
We are located in office 109 in the Boyette Building on the JSCC campus in Kenansville, NC.  We look forward to working with you.

Customer Relations

These days businesses will not survive, for long, without great customer service. Find out what you need to do to keep your current customers happy, attract new ones and keep both groups coming back. This seminar will highlight some of the typical reasons customers leave and what you can do to increase customer retention, discuss customer service from different perspectives and share stories - the good, the bad and the ugly. You'll leave with skills to improve customer relationships, build customer loyalty and increase sales.

Business Accounting and Budget

This seminar will cover the basics of setting up a small company’s financial records using QuickBooks. We’ll start with the company profile, set up the type of records the company will need, create customer and vendor accounts. From there students will learn how to record basic business transactions, including cash sales, sales on account, cash purchases, purchases on account, and inventory transactions. Finally, students will create financial statements and schedules for management.

This seminar is designed for beginner to intermediate users of any of the QuickBooks accounting software products, including but not limited to Pro, Premier, Enterprise, Non-Profits, Manufacturers, etc. Whether you attend to simply learn best practices or you are a complete newbie to the software, it doesn't matter. You will learn how to use the software to complete the accounting cycle of day-to-day transactions. Regardless of experience, you will gain a greater understanding to successfully utilize the program. Entrepreneurs, accounting professionals, office managers, and administrative assistants are just a few whom will benefit from this seminar.
