Storyteller Training is a powerful skill set for non-profit staff, boards and volunteers. If we want donors to give more, we must first give them more. Developing robust and meaningful relationships with donors naturally gives rise to increased donor retention and giving levels over time. As fundraisers, it can be really easy to develop "asking tunnel vision". But at the end of the day, we are asking other people to part with their hard-earned money. So we must treat them like people, not just a number in the database. By taking an empathetic approach to donor relations and creating communications that donors want to hear/read/watch, you lay the foundation for fruitful philanthropic relationships with donors. I encourage non-profits to create this culture and I work with to learn their 'stories', meet their story tellers, because we all have them. Sometime we call them program participants, board members, members, clients, staff or advocates... but ultimately, they are storytellers. It is a simple way to get folks engaged on your organizations behalf... help open doors, make the path for opportunities for folks to get involved with your non-profit. By focusing on impact through storytelling, you will be able to connect with a donor, emotionally, mentally and intellectually.
