Harlem Brewing: Building a Sustainable Brewing Company

North Carolina native and Shaw University Alumnus, Celeste Beatty returns to the Old North State just in time for NC BEER Month! Celeste’s love for Southern cooking was the springboard that landed her in the brewing industry. Beatty received a brew kit for Christmas and her friends' words kept playing through her head like a love song, "You know you can brew your own beer!" She began mixing her own creations in her New York apartment, which she likened to making a pot of her mother's soup. When her concoctions became a hit with family and friends, Beatty established Harlem Brewing Company in 2001. A non-traditionalist who never gave up on her dream, Celeste Beatty will share strategies that kept her focused while starting and growing Harlem Brewing Company. As an early mover into the mainly white, male dominated industry, Beatty has learned not only how to survive, but flourish and grow. Her products can be found in Whole Foods, Sylvia's, Red Rooster, and 39 Wal-Mart locations throughout New York. Beatty has made television appearances on MSNBC, Arise Entertainment 360, and Still Crazy After All These Beers. She has been featured in Forbes and the New York Times. Harlem Brewing recently won the 2018 Best Brews NYC People's Champ Award for its Harlem Renaissance Wit. Beatty is a member of the New York City Brewers Guild, the Brewers Association, and the New York State Brewers Association.
