Success Story - OBX Wake & Take
In May 2022, Jaclynn Peters connected with the College of The Albemarle’s Small Business Center to pursue her dream of launching OBX Wake & Take, a boutique breakfast catering and bakery business for vacation rentals, weddings, and local markets. With over 20 years in the restaurant industry, Jaclynn had the vision but needed support navigating challenges like access to a commercial kitchen, funding, and licensing. With guidance from SBC Director Holly Staples, she gained critical resources, joined a food industry cohort for peer support, and learned strategies for branding, product development, and marketing. When no shared-use kitchen was available, Jaclynn pivoted, using her parents’ inn to build her customer base through vendor markets and seasonal specials.
By 2024, Jaclynn secured a retail space in Nags Head and, with Holly’s advocacy, obtained funding through Partner Community Capital to complete renovations. In November 2024, she proudly opened her bakery to an eager customer base, transforming her idea into a thriving brand and community destination. By spring 2025, she was collaborating with other local entrepreneurs, supplying baked goods to the Meowter Banks Cat Café, and celebrating her ribbon cutting with standing-room only. Jaclynn’s journey is a powerful example of how determination, mentorship, and resourcefulness can turn a $10K idea into a successful small business on the Outer Banks.
To anyone trying to start a business in Dare County, I would definitely recommend reaching out to Holly at the Small Business Center—she is my hero. I received support in every single aspect of the process, and all of it was connected to the Small Business Center. Holly connected me with a number of critical resources. Anyone opening a small business is going to face obstacles—some you expect, and some you’d never see coming. I personally struggled to find a location and a lender. Holly introduced me to the lender who ultimately made it possible for me to open, and that connection was absolutely essential.
