How to Finance YOUR Small Business This seminar is not an over-the-attendee’s-head blast of complex financial material, rather a straight-forward, mission-critical information seminar that will help attendees develop a working financial plan, understand capital access, and leave with a basic knowledge of finance. Is financing right now a good idea for my small business? How can I tell how much money I need to finance my business? Why borrowing money from a bank is called debt financing? What is equity financing? What’s the difference? How can I get investors interested in my company? What are the main financial documents that I need to know about? Do I need an accountant? The above are all fair questions that I am asked often, and I’m always happy to answer those and many others in this seminar. I know from many years of experience that we cannot expect the majority of entrepreneurs to understand small business finance. While some small business owners may have a grasp on the basics of financial operations, many have little hands-on finance experience. In most cases, their drive and passion for their business idea begins to diminish after they have been introduced to even basic accounting statements such as budgeting and Profit and Loss Projections. I have seen it many times – they begin to wonder just what it takes to finance their venture, and if they can actually do it. As teachers, mentors and business counselors, we exist to help clients make better business decisions and one of those decisions is how to find the capital to move their venture forward from a dream into the free market economy. That is why this seminar exists – to help clients understand the basics of small business finance, how to finance their venture, and the current trends in small business lending. This workshop starts with a discussion of the client’s financial goals and then moves into a review of the basics of small business accounting and a discussion of fundamental accounting terms and financial statements. Then we will move into understanding business loan options and whether those options address start-up expenses, short-term cash flow challenges, or funding business growth. We will cover different types of loans and what the client will need to qualify. We will cover different eligibility requirements for debt-based financing, including minimum credit scores, cash flow and annual revenue requirements. Then we will move into equity based financing such as boot strapping, friends and family, investors or crowd funding options. I’ll cover the basics of financial integrity and the use of an accountant for financial reporting and taxation. Financial information can be overwhelming to early entrepreneurs so the seminar is designed to be interesting and interactive with tips, tactics and strategies that will stick with the attendees. I try to stress that financing a small business and managing finance simply cannot be learned overnight but is a learning process – just another part of the business learning curve. The take-away is that financing a small business is not as complicated as most entrepreneurs think. This workshop with help attendees understand and discover the wide range of financing options available to small businesses and what the current strategies, trends, and prediction are.
