The Small Business Agricultural Entrepreneurship Certificate Program (NC REAL) is designed for those growing crops, trees, raising livestock, making sauces, pickles or jams with items from a garden. . Have you ever wanted to own a small business or develop your skills to increase your success as an agricultural entrepreneur? This seven-week interactive course is designed to strengthen the business skills of community farmers and budding agricultural entrepreneurs to help them develop and manage a profitable, environmentally sound small farm or agricultural business. Students who participate in this program will learn how to operate effectively in order to gain the highest profit margin possible. Topics will include: Pricing, logistics to get product to market, best market and what to do between growing seasons to still receive income. Classes meet once every week for seven weeks (3 hours each class). You will also discover the details of business development and management, finance and regulatory requirements, quality and safety standards and more. You will also be introduced to resources and contacts you need to run your business more efficiently and effectively. As an added bonus, you will become a client of the Halifax Community College Small Business Center, where you will take your idea to the next level of business planning. This is a hands-on, interactive program, beneficial to farmers or anyone who grows a marketable agricultural product, who wishes to start a business or has been in business 0-3 years. Ultimately, this course will give participants opportunities to develop skills which will increase their likelihood of success as an agricultural entrepreneur. Program Curriculum: Class 1 – Introduction to Business Planning Class 2 – Exploring Agricultural Business Ideas: Self Assessment & Farm Assessment Class 3 – Marketing Class 4 – Business Operations Class 5 – Introduction to Business Financials Class 6 – Business Financials and legal issues, Class 7 – Pulling It All Together: Business Proposals. Weekly consultants will be present to provide expert advice on various topics. HCC Small Business Center will provide One-on-One Confidential Counseling. Tuition is $70. Book for course is $40.
