With over 650,000 businesses involved in the creation or distribution of the arts, the creative industry employs more than 3.48 million people. Arts businesses and the creative people they employ stimulate innovation, strengthen competitiveness in the marketplace, and play an important role in building and sustaining economic vibrancy. There are many pieces and parts to having a successful career that go beyond just being a talented artist. The complexities of your business are not always managed on a spreadsheet, and often you do not have the knowledge to handle certain situations or make the best decisions. The DC Artist Summit hosted by Davidson County Community College and Arts Davidson County was developed to help address some of these concerns. We encourage each of you to use the opportunity to learn, collaborate and inspire each other. DC Artist Summit Session Topics Photographing Your Products Like a Pro- You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have expensive equipment to take good quality photos with your digital camera or phone. Learn the secrets the experts use to create good lighting, quality backgrounds and powerful angles. Discover the three points of light and how to create your own with items you already have around your house, as well as explore easy to use editing programs. Pitching Your Craft Business the Right Way- Have you ever been asked to describe your product or business and not been exactly sure what to say? You may have rambled on and probably lost their interest in the process. Start putting together a well-crafted “pitch” and you’ll be much more likely to make a lasting impression. It’s important that people walk away from your first interaction not only having a basic understanding of what you do and who you are, but also interested in your business. Learn tips and tricks for developing a business pitch to impress! Creating Your Own Graphics and Promotional Designs- Would you like to have sharp and cleverly designed marketing pieces for your business? Good news, you don’t need experience in graphic design or even an investment in expensive software to do so. This session will show you how to use Canva, a free, web-based resource that will allow you to go from being a beginner to a master at graphics overnight! Learn how to create and publish professional and creative marketing designs that include brochures, flyers, social media graphics, logos, labels and more that would normally cost you a fortune. Turn your imagination into finished designs in minutes! *Access to a laptop or tablet is recommended for this session. Selling More Than Ever Before- Having a great product or location is only half of the equation to successful selling. At the end of the day, customers must be willing to BUY from you and you must know how to SELL. Selling is a skill and learning to sell yourself and your work is an art form all by itself! You don’t need gimmicks or sales speeches, but you will need to listen and understand what your customer really wants. Learn how to listen to your customers and communicate clearly the benefits of what you have to offer. Jumping Into Art Merchandise- Are you looking to reach more customers with varying price points? Would you like to identify products to sell that are inexpensive and take no time to make? Are you interested in selling your designs on tshirts or similar products to reach a wider market? If you answered yes to any of these questions then “art merch” is definitely worth exploring. This session will cover the basics on how art merchandise works, how you can make your own and ultimately use it to create new income streams and grow your business. Running the Numbers, Creative Style! Can’t be bothered with numbers because you are too creative? As an artist, you should not see managing your finances as a bothersome chore, but instead view it as a tool to help you more quickly achieve your creative dreams. Financial stability doesn't make you any less of an artist or performer, but it WILL make you a smarter business owner and help you achieve long-term success! Building a Brand that Will Set You Apart- As the professional craft artist industry continues to expand and grow quickly, you may be wondering how you can set yourself apart. A brand is more than a logo and it influences your customers experience at every touchpoint. Learn tips and tricks and marketing practices that have been proven to engage your clients, help them remember you and make yourself stand out from the rest! Making More Sales with Etsy- Etsy is a great place to sell handmade items because it is very image-driven. Many creatives have found a way to make a living selling exclusively on this site, so it’s definitely worth exploring! Discover key features that will allow you to increase your exposure on Etsy.
