The Wilson Community College Small Business Center (SBC) endeavors to serve all Wilson County prospective and existing small business owners by continuing to add programming to reach and engage all those who are interested in business ownership now or in the future. To that end, the Youth Entrepreneur Summer Camp will introduce youth attendees to entrepreneurship training through experiential and facilitated learning activities under the leadership of the SBC Director. This program is made possible in part due to a grant from recognized business leaders from the Wilson Chamber of Commerce’s Executive Academy Class of 2020.

Within a team environment, youth participants will engage in the following activities:

  • Understand the core attributes that are common threads with highly successful business owners
  • Learn the basic steps to start a business and identify opportunities for small business ventures
  • Complete a business model canvas and understand the components of a business plan
  • Choose a team’s idea or choose to develop an independent idea into a business
  • Evaluate the idea, prepare a cash flow spreadsheet, and consider additional profit centers
  • Generate marketing ideas and be introduced to some unique ideas
  • Learn about financial literacy and its lifelong impact for a business owner
  • Understand typical owner investment requirements and consider crowdfunding and bootstrapping
  • Evaluate the cost of financing and consider stepping-stone businesses without financing
  • Participate in a presentation of the team’s idea to a panel of judges

Through participation in the camp, students will also learn real-world business skills and soft skills such as:

  • Team Building
  • Leadership Development
  • Financial Management
  • Creative Problem Solving
  • Business Etiquette
  • Time Management

Additionally, students will be exposed to a college setting and learn from successful professionals and business owners who will share their business startup experiences and offer feedback on the final presentations given by the participants on July 28 (Day 4).

Young people often express barriers to business ownership citing a lack of funds, entrepreneurial awareness, money management skills, limited networking opportunities, and customer service skills; the latter often due to a lack of work experience. Developing an entrepreneurial mindset in youth will move them through these barriers while encouraging practical action steps that can lead to emerging and inspired entrepreneurs.

Important Notes for Parents/Guardians and Students:

  • This event is only for Wilson County youth ages 14-16 as of July 25, 2022. Participation is required for all four days/sixteen hours of the camp and for the homework. To ensure success, each student will have a reading assignment and a survey to complete with up to 10 adults after class each of the first three days.

  • Students should use their own name and personal email address when registering for this event. A supplemental form will also be required to complete the application process. This form, which will be emailed to each student after registration, must be completed and signed by a parent/guardian and returned to the SBC no later than 6:00 PM on July 14, 2022. Although the camp capacity is limited to 16 students, we are accepting registrations for up to 25 students to create a waiting list in the event that some of the first 16 registrants subsequently notify us that they will be unable to attend or do not complete the mandatory supplemental form. Applicants will be considered based upon the date/time of their registration, and will be notified regarding final acceptance via email no later than July 18, 2022.

  • Students must have access to a computer or cell phone with a camera and microphone for the Zoom sessions on July 26 and July 27. For those virtual sessions, there is a two-step registration process. If you are notified of acceptance into the camp, you will receive an email from the SBC Director that includes Zoom links for both virtual sessions. In order to participate, you must also register via the Zoom platform. Each participant will be manually accepted, so only the campers and any approved adjunct instructors are allowed in the breakout rooms for Zoom.
